The Woods & Wildlife in the Harwick Estate

Hardwick is one of the Top 40 Sites in the Country for Veteran Trees including Oak & Hawthorn. The oak being home to the Nationally Rare Corticeus Uni-color Beetle (Hister Beetle range).

Originally Hardwick would have been part of the great Sherwood Forest . The remaining woods include:

  • Dovedale Wood – Triple SSSI site (Site of Special Scientific Interest) – This ancient woodland is known for its flora & fauna sites.
  • Lodge Wood & Cross Wood are Ancient Semi Natural Woodlands. The old and decaying trees in these woodlands are particularly important for the insects and fungi that depend on them.
  • Woodland walks here at Hardwick are always particularly spectacular. The spring time however offers the vibrant smell of wild garlic in Ladies Spencers Wood or you can enjoy the carpets of bluebells in Cross Wood in May.

We have 12 ponds with various pond life including various dragon flies and the rare Water Vole.

Hedgerows – Wild Flowers – Streams – New & Old Quarry the stone from which is used for estate maintenance.
